For our exercise today, work with a partner who shares your major. Choose one of the professional genres from our previous class. After reading through the scenario below, respond using one of those genres. Think about the type of document you’d need to respond as a professional in your field. For instance, what would a report written by a police officer regarding this event sound like? What would a vet’s write up look and sound like? Use the handout you filled out in class on 4/1 to help guide you as you make decisions for the tone, style, audience, etc. of the piece you’re working with. Remember that your response should be uploaded to your in-class writing folder when you’ve finished.
Handouts from 4/1/17:
- Police report
- Police press release
- Business progress report
- Barn boarding agreement
- Veterinary care plan
- Political Science policy analysis (from U Texas)
- Social Work client assessment
- Psychology client analysis
- Fashion review
Scenario for “Mad Libs”
The New York Times reports that a West Coast fashion designer has recently come under fire for using dead animals on the runway. The designer, who deals strictly in vegan materials, claims that they wanted to highlight the cruelty of the leather and fur industries by exposing the crowd to the decaying bodies of animal victims of vehicle incidents. Someone from the crowd called 911 as the show began and models flung the animals at the crowd, striking and injuring several people with animal corpses. The designer was seen being dragged out of the building, screaming nonsensically and attempting to assault the arresting officers. The investigation has brought to light that the designer, who is known for their “eccentric” personality, lifestyle, and clothing lines, has displayed increasingly troubling behavior over the past year. Their involvement in fringe animal rights activism groups has led to their neglecting their business, as well as their children, elderly parents, and small Morgan horse farm outside of Westchester, NY. (The family lives together in a large Upper West Side apartment in Manhattan.) The designer’s company had signed a contract to complete an exclusive clothing line for Nordstrom last year. When asked for comment, Nordstrom said they had asked for updates on the line just last week and had received no response. Friends of the designer have filed complaints with officials regarding the welfare of the designer’s three daughters and 87-year-old mother, all of whom have been locked in the apartment for over a week. Boarders at the Morgan farm are suing for breach of contract as ASPCA officials found the barn in inhumane conditions after it had been left unattended for some time. The fringe activist group the designer has been connected to is currently part of a lobbying campaign to pass a contentious bill, known popularly as “the Roadkill Bill,” which would make it a capital offense to kill wild animals with a motor vehicle. After her arrest, the designer was taken to Bellevue Hospital’s psychiatric ward for evaluation.
