My Immediate reaction to reading this was why must they speak so negatively about reporters and journalist? I know they aren’t always the most liked people on the planet, but they’re just doing their job. This tone seems both serious and yet relaxed at the same time. This affected me because I could tell that they were trying to make a point but also add a few jokes to lighten the mood. Which I agree with I understood the point they were trying to make and I agree especially with this statement. “Most reporters are celebrated or condemned not because of the importance or truth of their story but according to whether their story suits the public’s mood”. This got my attention because I am one of those people who is on the fence when it comes to reporters.

Sometimes I feel they can’t be trusted and other times I feel that their right. It depends on the topic and what my feelings are on that topic. I feel that they were targeting any person who has an ounce of feelings towards reporters or journalist. This piece really got me thinking about how I view reporters and journalist. I feel they were trying to make a point about what journalist do and how they are received by someone watching, reading, or listening to what they have to say. I agree with this piece for the most part but me personally I could never go as far as comparing them to dogs I just feel that they are doing their job whether I agree with what they do or say. This does not connect to anything that I have read lately, but overall I enjoyed reading this.

When I first opened this reading I liked that it was short and that it was in a comic type of reading. I like that the reading was easy to follow and that it was not in a textbook type of reading. I find myself when they are in textbook form throughout the whole reading I am dosing off and distracted. I also have to agree that I liked that they added some jokes into the reading so that it could keep us entertained as we went through the reading. As I continued to read I had thought to myself that I as well sometimes have a hard time believing and trusting certain news groups. I feel at times some of the news sources are only out to put the negative into people’s minds, which then makes people think negative about the world. I like when we read pieces from Gladstone in class because the readings are usually short and sweet and right to the point. He knows how to keep his audience engaged in his readings. Even through this piece of literature was not really targeted to my major I still found it interesting to read about the journalist field since my one best friend is doing that as her major in Boston. I found that this would be a piece of literature that she might be interested in reading once she is back home for spring break. The one thing I really liked about this reading was that there was not words I have not heard before which was nice because I did not have to go back and forth off of Google to find the definition. I find that when I have to do that in the reading I do not put my fullest attention into it because all I am thinking about is when I am going to be done with it. When I can read through a reading with no problem it makes it more enjoyable to complete the assignment. Overall, I think this was a great reading. Very informational and very easy to follow along. I like when we have these types of readings for blog post because like I said earlier they are short and sweet and to the point. They are not like 30-35 pages long that just loses my interest in what I need to learn to become a better writer not only for this class but as well as my other classes.

While Reading your response, I completely agree that the statement, “Most reporters are celebrated or condemned not because of the importance or truth of their story but according to whether their story suits the public’s mood,” caught my attention. When I read this, I made note on it because it holds a lot of truth. People tend to get mad when the news does not agree with their opinion. For example, if the news shows a candidate doing something very unprofessional, the people who support that candidate will say it is all fabricated and lies. All the reporter may have done was report but since it wad not what some people wanted to see they will get hated on for it.
When I saw this was by gladstone, I was very happy. I like her style of writing and the comic theme. It keeps my attention. I also agree she will throw in some humor here and there to lighten up the mood which is nice.
One of my other favorite parts of this reading was when she started talking about the news reported during hurricane Katrina. There was so terrible things that happened that I didn’t know about. Oh…wait… Those things didn’t happen! I was shocked when she said they didn’t happen but why should I be? The media lies, right? Well it was pretty upsetting to see the lies that the media made up about such sensitive topics. After reading that, it was clear this is the real the media gets a bad reputation.
Another line of this comic that grabbed my attention was “The press is a bunch of blackbirds on a wire. One bird will fly to another wire, and when it doesn’t get electrocuted, all the birds will fly to that other wire.” I love this analogy and it is also very true. Once one reporter does a report and doesn’t get hated on, the rest will follow.

Overall I enjoy reading Gladstone’s work it’s a nice break from traditional text and I like the illustration and dialogue which is more effective in keeping my attention and is more entertaining. “canis Journalisticus” was an interesting piece which I feel gave a very negative view on journalism by using example of events in the past which mad journalists look bad. I’m not the kind of person that believes everything I hear on the new but I don’t feel like the news and journalist are completely terrible people which is somewhat how this piece made them sound.

The reading is informing us about how we cant always trust the new and supporting with examples from the past, I don’t think that this is as big of a topic as it once was because we have some many outlets due to social media for people to express there opinions and this makes it easier for people to be aware of both sides of the story and everyone interpretation of things.

In the end I’m much happier that I live in a country that allows freedom of speech and press than one that doesn’t. The news does a lot to keep its viewers informed about what’s happening nationally and globally and I couldn’t imagine living completely in the dark like others countries are.
