Part I. Example Ethnography Discussion
Get into groups according to the reading you were assigned. Together, discuss the following questions. Take notes in your in-class writing folder in order to help us generate discussion when we report back to the whole class.
- What did you notice first when you began reading the piece?
- What appealed to you as a reader? What didn’t work for you?
- What rhetorical choices do you see being made here? (Tone/style, purpose, appeals, etc.)?
- After thinking about the genre, think back to Kahn. Where do you see connections between the piece you read and Kahn’s guidelines for ethnography?
- We know that the genre of this piece is ethnography. After reading through it, what characteristics can you pick out? What stylistic, formulaic, and content-based choices were made that seem to be unique to the genre? (e.g. tone, organization, format, content, vocabulary, etc.)
Part II. Proposals
Your homework for next week is to develop a proposal for our upcoming Empirical Research project. Take a look at these guidelines for proposals.
