ParticipantI agree with everyone here that we can all relate to this topic being students in college. We’ve all questioned why do we need to take certain courses and that they will never help is in the long even back in high school this question always came up. However my first writing course here at Centenary refreshed my memory a bit from what I’ve learned In high school and I’ve also learned new things. Writing is major part of Criminal justice. Writing many reports when on duty happens daily. The reports that officers need to write are basically a narrative telling a story on the events that took place, and every detail is need of what happened. Overall, this article wasn’t bad because it was something that I have experienced and can relate to.

ParticipantI also enjoyed this read because it was a comic. This makes it more interesting to read because we have visuals to look at while we are reading. The overal topic of this reading was interesting to me and I learned a lot. Many times I’ve heard the word bias and what it means, but never knew there were different types of bias. This information was new for me and I’m interested about learning more of each type of bias.

ParticipantAfter reading this mini article I was very satisfied with the whole thing. I enjoyed that there wasn’t so much reading to do and the way the author explained the art of science. Most of the science articles that I see are based off of research and new experiments that people are trying. This article has explained science differently. Although I’m not a fan of science this article was interesting.

ParticipantKira, I agree with you that this reading was an easy read. Any of the readings that are assigned to us dealing with comics I enjoy more because of the visuals that we see to emphasize on the reading and making it more enjoyable. The topic of the reading I felt was very interesting. I agree with the details in the readings but also the main point of the reading that reliable sources can be wrong or unreliable. Every journalist is considered biased to me because it is apart of their job to talk about an event and express their opinions or views. I agree with the author when he mentions journalists leave out details and that what they put out isn’t 100% truthful or reliable, yet we still look into it because we are curious. Kira, I also agree with you that you should double check your sources because you don’t want to believe everything you first see or click on while you’re on media. That is a great idea and also it could help you gain more information because one source may give you a bit more than the next. This reading was very informative giving us information about journalists and what to do when looking for sources.

ParticipantAs I began to read this article I also didn’t know what ethnographic writing was. Kahn does a great job at explaining what the word actually means as well as including some examples. Further into the reading as I gained better understanding I realized that I have done ethnographic writing before last semester which was a personal narrative piece . I liked how Kahn used that example because many people especially college students have written personal narratives to gain a better understanding of yourself. I enjoyed how Kahn included the benefits of ethnographic writing to show how it can help writers when they begin to write a piece such as this one. I agree that this reading was a bit long and drawn out because he came to his main point very quickly. I also agree that this is something college students would enjoy reading about because they can gain knowledge of another form of writing they could do rather than the basic personal narratives. This is something that I’m interested in doing one day because it would give me a chance to write about someone who is from a different culture and to have an understanding of their thinking and talking.

ParticipantI agree with both of you that this reading was a bit confusing to understand. Just by the small text it made me lose interest a little bit however I did go back and re-read the text to get a better understanding of what Gee was trying to say. The repetition of the word “discourse” was another thing that made me confused at first because I never knew what the word meant. Towards the end I gained a little bit of understanding of the word. The only thing that bothered me about this reading was that I couldn’t relate to anything because the author didn’t use examples that readers could relate to. I believe I would’ve enjoyed this reading a lot more if her had done so, to make it more appealing to readers and not bore them. Overall my experience with this reading was confusing.
