ParticipantI agree with everyone else on how this reading was easier due to the comic. Personally, I am not used to reading comics so even though it was easier to read than other articles it was also somewhat difficult to follow. I did however find it more interesting and fun to read and it helped make the material more understanding. Gladstone made the reading simple and easy to follow by laying out the different biases and gave examples with each.
For me it was an eye opener to how many things we deal with day to day are biased. The media is something everyone relies on for information so if the media itself is biased, it doesn’t give the person a chance to see both sides of the story and make their own decisions on the side they find best suited for them. I also agree with Matt on how the reporters have their own opinions of situations, but I believe they should do a better job at reporting the situations not their opinions of it, it should be up to the viewer to create their biases.

ParticipantWhen I read the article I was also confused but also intrigued about the new terminology. For me, I never learned about discourse or linguistics. I have however heard of literacy. I agree with Ashley on how the reading was difficult to read due to the copy of the textbook into a PDF form but I found the reading to be very informative. The background on the author I found was sort of unnecessary. It is nice to learn about the author some, but it wasn’t needed for this article. If it was something written about the author, it would have helped to have background knowledge, but for information on literacy, discourse, and linguistics, the author didn’t need an intro. The reading was informative, like I said, but it was also difficult to follow. Evonne said that the authors tone was difficult to follow and I agree 100%. Overall, the reading did help me understand the vocab more, but it was difficult to follow and understand.

ParticipantI do agree with everyone that when I did see how many pages we had to read I did feel like it would be boring. Besides the “un-interesting” factor, I did find that it was very informative. For me, to fully understand the reading and be able to comprehend it properly, it must capture my attention. As I was reading I didn’t really understand it at first because I was just hard for me to be attentive to it. The fact that pictures were used in the text did however help me understand it more. I am a very visual learner, I can remember pictures a lot easier than I can recite text. I feel as if the author could have done better on her word choice and how her tone came across, but the pictures did help me. I also like hoe Evonne brought up “a picture is worth a thousand words” because I feel as if the author could have used that to her advantage more in the text instead of coming off to the readers as confusing or uninteresting.

ParticipantAlyssa, I really enjoy how well you touched on each subject. I also agree, with Morgan on how it is also difficult for me to read formal essays. I believe there is just a better flow to to informal essays, it is easier for me to understand and also relate with. Once again agreeing with Morgan, I am a very visual learner, I find it very difficult to learn through reading or being told, but the visualization helped me very much. You did a great job on reviewing the article.
