ParticipantWhen I first opened the article it was sort of long which felt like it was going to drag on. I was not a fan of it being in textbook form but it did have good information in it. I like how the article could relate to us because we are in composition writing so it helps understand the course a lot more. I have to agree with Brittany that we will be doing all sorts of writing because I am also in the psychology field. I feel like this article did a well job steering us in the right direction for the composition writings. I feel like this article gave me more knowledge on the composition as a write of passage. In the section about learning how to learn to write I like how it taught you how it should go and what we should be aware of. I liked how that was in bullet points because it helps the reader get a sense of what should be in the writing. In my opinion I like that better in bullet point form because it is straight forward as to what is expected in the paper so it is easier to write your paper. I like the section of writing outside FYC. The reason why I like that section is because it applies to my major like I stated previously. It showed me how exactly it would be used in my major as well as had someone from my field talk about it. Overall, I feel like this piece that we have read has been the best one yet because not only does it relate to my field it also gives me an insight of exactly how it will be used. Even though it was long it was very informational and it flowed really easily that I finished reading it pretty quickly.

ParticipantWhen I first opened the reading I was really happy that it was only four pages long. I thought that being on break there would be a lot of reading to do before class, and I was happy that that was not the case. As I was reading through the reading I found it pretty interesting. I had thought about this somewhat fitting into my major which is psychology. Psychology is a science so when I saw the title it had interested me in reading more into it. I like that this was in a short story form. It was short and sweet and kind of right to the point. The thing I did not like about this reading was it in my opinion is not very helpful for what we are currently doing in class. I feel like maybe it could have been more an informational type of reading rather than a short story. The reason why I say that is because reading through first drafts I found that some struggled with that was asked to be done for this topic. Even though I liked the personal short story I do not think it was much help for people who are struggling with writing the second paper. If the author had gone into more depth about science writing then this would have been an excellent piece of literature to help us with this paper. But overall I liked the story that the author had told. It was a personal story which was nice since it was something different that we read so far this semester. The only thing that I did not like was the fact that it did not have much detail in how to actually write a science type paper. I think maybe it should be discussed more in class how to actually write a science type paper so that everyone knows what is expected at the end of this assignment. If anything maybe a different reading so that it is more clear on what science writing actually is for some who are not quite sure.

ParticipantWhen I first opened this reading I liked that it was short and that it was in a comic type of reading. I like that the reading was easy to follow and that it was not in a textbook type of reading. I find myself when they are in textbook form throughout the whole reading I am dosing off and distracted. I also have to agree that I liked that they added some jokes into the reading so that it could keep us entertained as we went through the reading. As I continued to read I had thought to myself that I as well sometimes have a hard time believing and trusting certain news groups. I feel at times some of the news sources are only out to put the negative into people’s minds, which then makes people think negative about the world. I like when we read pieces from Gladstone in class because the readings are usually short and sweet and right to the point. He knows how to keep his audience engaged in his readings. Even through this piece of literature was not really targeted to my major I still found it interesting to read about the journalist field since my one best friend is doing that as her major in Boston. I found that this would be a piece of literature that she might be interested in reading once she is back home for spring break. The one thing I really liked about this reading was that there was not words I have not heard before which was nice because I did not have to go back and forth off of Google to find the definition. I find that when I have to do that in the reading I do not put my fullest attention into it because all I am thinking about is when I am going to be done with it. When I can read through a reading with no problem it makes it more enjoyable to complete the assignment. Overall, I think this was a great reading. Very informational and very easy to follow along. I like when we have these types of readings for blog post because like I said earlier they are short and sweet and to the point. They are not like 30-35 pages long that just loses my interest in what I need to learn to become a better writer not only for this class but as well as my other classes.
February 22, 2017 at 12:55 pm in reply to: Putting Ethnographic Writing in Context by Seth Kahn #283Ashley Caramanna
ParticipantWhen I first had opened the PDF file I thought it was a lot of pages and I had no clue what ethnography was. As I started to read it I found myself reading through it pretty quickly. It was an easy reading to go through compared to last week’s reading. I like how the font size was bigger than how last weeks was. It did not make me feel as if I was reading out of a textbook. It made me feel as if I was just reading an article online. I have to agree with Brittany that I liked how he tied in some examples into the reading. I find when there are examples to go along with a reading it can make the reader be engaged in the reading. The reader can see if any of the examples relate to them. I feel like in this reading I got what the author was trying to say compared to some of the previous readings we have done in class. I also can agree with Brittany with I learn with hands on rather than a textbook. If I can practice over and over I can eventually master it. If I have to read about it a lot and continue going over power points I can not pick it up quickly. I think it would be interesting to try to write an ethnographic paper just to see if I have ever written one in the past because I do not recall off the top of my head if I ever did or not. I feel like this was an important reading that we have read because it gave us information on a new topic. Overall, I thought this was a good reading just wish maybe it was a little shorter.

ParticipantWhen I first read the title of the reading I thought to myself I have never heard anything about literacy, discourse, and linguistics. The thing that I liked off the back of this reading was how they had given a little background of the writer. I think that sometimes it is important to have an introduction of the person who wrote something because a person can get to know a little bit about them and also they usually tell you other books, or pieces that person has published. The one thing that I did not like off the back was how it was a textbook that was copied on. It made the piece a little difficult to read because the print was small like a textbook and also faded a little bit. Also another thing that I did not like about this reading was how it had the “getting ready to read” section. I feel like if we are reading a piece it should by the end tell us what they wanted us to look for. This reading has left me confused and needing clarification in class. I wish the author could have used relatable examples so that I could have understand the text and not be so confused as to what I read. To understand this text more I feel like maybe we should have discussed it a little bit in class so some of our questions could have been answered so then when we read the text we could have grasped the text better. Overall, I was not the biggest fan of this text. If it was explained better I feel like this text could have been helpful and not left me so confused. Also I was more not a fan of this text than a fan. There was some good things about it but I feel like there was more not good things to me personally.

ParticipantWhen I first opened the text and saw that it started with pattern I already thought why do we need to read about this we learned it back in high school. As I continued to read I felt kind of bored with it. I felt like I was reading out of the textbook compared to last week’s reading which grab I think most our attention. Since I am a visual learner I have to agree that an image does help me to remember a topic. Also I can always picture it in my head for when I am tested on it, so an image with good pattern does play a big part to someone like me who is a visual learner because I can picture that image perfectly. I have to say I was pretty bored with reading about the historical context, social context and economic context. I feel like it really was not written in a way that would grab my attention. This reading kind of made me feel like I was back in high school because my teachers would give us a big packet like this and learn from it. Even though it was not the most interesting piece of text that I have read I did get a better understanding of what the author had discussed in the text. The one thing that I had learned in the text was how to use visual mediums. Back in high school none of my English teachers and ever talked about that. I feel like I need visual analogy a lot when it comes to psychology class because at times I do not know what the professor is talking about and if they had more visual analogy I think I could pick up the material much quicker instead of sitting and having to study much longer. I agree that pictures are helpful because they do tend to jog your memory and you can either remember if you have learned about it or not. I also have to agree that words and pictures used together can help a person understand something because sometimes if you do not get what you are reading and then look at the pictures you can put two and two together and realize what the text is trying to tell you. Overall I think that if it was written differently than it would have caught my attention more and I would have like the piece better.

ParticipantAlyssa first off you did a great job summarizing the whole reading. I agree with you that the way he wrote this did sound like it was an email rather than something straight out of the textbook. I think the way that he wrote this was really good because he was targeting us college students so he knew exactly how to keep our attention. When I first opened up the PDF file and saw it was fifteen pages I was like “really fifteen pages on genres.” As I started to read I found myself reading through it pretty quickly because it had grabbed my attention because one it was not written as something in the textbook and two because he knew how to keep our attention to finish reading the whole essay. The thing I liked about this author was that he was real. By that I mean when he told us that he looked up different examples of essays before he actually started writing this one. I like that because I feel like I can relate to him because when I do not understand something in class I like to look for examples or something similar to what we are doing so it can give me a spark and then I can complete the assignment. I also like to look up examples if the teacher is not clear on what our task is. Alyssa I also agree with you that if we have too many rules for writing it takes the enjoyment out of it. I am a person who loves to free write and not follow so many rules. I feel like if a person can pick their type of genre to write then they will most likely get a better grade as well as not feeling like its pulling their teeth. I like the fact that the author had added some humor because it’s like he puts a piece of himself into the essay. By that I mean he does not try to act all professional just like how our textbook have to be all professional.
